Which theme to choose to make my own - Vanilla 3.3

So I am wanting to customize an existing vanilla theme and make my own changes to it.
I've looked around and there's two already exisiting ones I saw on my 3.3 installation, them being the default barebones one (Baseline+), and the Keystone one.
The Keystone layout fits more with what I have in mind.. however the theme folder also has a lot more stuff to it, like a themehooks.php and whatnot and I just wonder... if I edit this theme the way I want to, do I run the risk of the theme running into issues further down the road with new updates coming to vanilla etc?
Like, it being a pre-exisiting theme, does that ensure the fuctionality further down the road? I don't want to put in all the effort into making it look exactly as I want, to have the problem in a few years of it no longer working if you get what I mean.
