Even if your server is writable if your picture didn't upload, and if shows 404. and here I am talking about the latest version of vanilla.
Kindly help and update me as soon as possible.

I do not understand your question. Can you explain ? It show a 404 only when uploading a picture ? On the profile picture upload or on the editor upload ?

That is not specific enough like @k17 said, the whole server should not be writeable. Only publicly accessible folders like the uploads folder where pictures are stored. What are the permission for uploads?
It shows a 404 only when uploading a picture of .jpg format. one of my friends told me when she was uploading a file for Shufti Pro. So, they were facing the same issue as I was facing so I thought I should discuss it on the vanilla forum.
