Extensions for 1 and 1.0.1

This is a pretty generic question - When a extensions says - Requires Vanilla 1 does that mean it will not work with Vanilla 1.0.1 At first I thought extensions built for 1 would carry on to 1.0.1 - but this does not appear to be the case. And if it is the case - I must be doing something wrong.
