I use the boilerplate theme and the latest version of Vanilla Forum 2021.009
(How) Can I add images in the side panel below the navigation?
I have seen https://open.vanillaforums.com/addon/1258/widgets and also that it was last updated in 2014 so am rather cautious about it.

Sounds like a task for Pockets (which is in-core now) look for it in Plugins section in dashboard)
