Giant icons in dashboard

Hello. I've recently upgraded to 2.5 and now the dashboard is filled with icons that occupy the entire width of the window. Most of them are arrows like this picture. How can I fix that?

2.5 is EOL, released 5 years ago.

Thanks Kaspar. I was a bit scared about updating to the different version numbering since it seemed like it might be a more major jump.
