Unable to change user role

I am unable to change the user role to 'Moderator' (or any other) because of a 404 error.

This was after a fresh install with version 2024.004.

I just tried downgrading to built-vanilla-2023.014 but that made no difference, still the same issue.

What can I try? Would appreciate your help!

Do you have index.php in your forum url?

    If so enable pretty urls

Not sure whether it is related to your issue but pretty url have been a requirement for years but is not enabled per default.

Plenty of issues from not having it enabled.

  • Hi Kaspar,

Thanks for your quick reply. I don't have index.php in the URL and should have pretty url's enabled.

I decided to use another basesystem for my forum because Vanilla is clearly not intended to be open source (anymore).

It looks great, but troubleshooting and customization is terrible. This Open Vanilla forum isn't even working proparly, I get error messages when I try to post something or reply.

Thanks for your reply anyway though, maybe it will help someone else! :)

  • I also faced a similar issue while working with Vanilla. I found that checking the server configuration and ensuring pretty URLs were set up correctly helped me. Sometimes, it can also be related to permissions.

  • A 404 error usually means the page or resource can’t be found. You might want to try clearing your cache, as old data can sometimes cause issues. Also, check if your user account has the necessary permissions to change roles. It could be helpful to look for any updates since your installation, as a patch might be available.
