intro to programming

I am debating between ruby and django. I am an extremely novice programmer, but have the desire to learn. Can you recommend a great book that introduces one of the high-level languages above through concept and example? I have been researching it and I thought it would be more obvious. Where would you begin?

    and before you pick up Django, I'd recommend going and picking up something like "Python in a Nutshell", just to get to grips with the basics. Walk before you run!

    nice point.... i am sure it will save me a lot of time in the longrun. even the installation on a shared hosting environment is not so simple for a newbie.... but i am sure it is easy - have to keep reading... thank you.
