Using existing user table for Vanilla?

Hi, I have an existing site with a database of about 500 members and I want to set up a forum for them. I want something that will fit seamlessly into my current system, so after they login to my site, they can just click forum and it takes them to the forum already authenticated. I was hoping to have Vanilla pull the username and password from my existing table and use its own tables for everything else. Is this possible to do? Any information on places to start would be greatly appreciated. Mahalo, Dave
