Restoring a Backed Up Database

I'm going to be switching hosts, so I need to back up the database I have behind my Vanilla installation. What are the steps I need to take to ensure there are no problems for my users? I imagine I need to backup the database - perhaps through PHPMyAdmin. But when I restore the database, will it suffice to just change Vanilla's configuration PHP file to reference the new database? Are there any other changes I'll need to make? Like to the .htaccess file? I'm pretty inexperienced at this, so I'd appreciate any help. Thanks for your time, Sumeet
