Newbie: .htaccess

The problem is that I have my forums in http://domainexample.com/forums (I renamed "Vanilla 1.0.1" to "forums") the problem is that if you type http://domainexample.com you can see the root, the folders, the files. So I investigated and I found that the key was a file called .htaccess. But after creating and editing it, if I write: Redirect / http://domainexample.com/forums, the link it returns is something like: http://domain.com/forums/forums/forums/forums/forums... What I am doing wrong? Thanks (And forgive my spanglish)
