Vanilla Styles & Themes Difficulty

I'm sure its just me, but I am having a hard time customizing Vanilla to my needs. I've used other messgage board systems in the past (such as PhpBB) and didn't have nearly as much trouble. The reason I decided to go with Vanilla instead of PhpBB was mainly because I liked how it was just a little different. Can anyone suggest a user friendly guide to customizing your Vanilla board OTHER than the documentation from Vanilla's site? Thanks!

I don't know what the documentation says, but I like the try and error method (if this can be called a method). If you use Firefox, the extension http://www.iosart.com/firefox/colorzilla/ helps a lot.
