Application Settings

edited January 2007 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
I have installed Vanilla on my server but it is not yet linked to my website. I have some questions about the boxes in Settings -> Application Settings. What should be placed in SMTP host, SMTP user, SMPT password? Since these are blank is this why my new applicants don't get notification that they are accepted? What goes in Label Prefix [ and Label suffix ]. What does it affect? Sorry to be so dense.

  • If you are on a normal LAMP (Linux, Apache, PHP and MySql) server, there is no need to add any of the SMTP settings, the PHP will take care of any mailing that takes place. The Label Suffix and Prefix are the characters that go before and after a label. There are several labels throughout Vanilla such as Sticky, Closed, Deleted, and Sunk. For instance take a look at this forum and you'll see that the "sticky" label has a label suffix and prefix of "[" and "]".
  • You'd want to use the SMTP stuff if you're testing the forums on a local windows XAMPP install for instance. It would save you setting up a mail server and you can just add in your regular email details there for testing purposes.
  • Ok. I get it. I can change the square brackets to some other symbol. And I am on the server you describe so the mail function will be automatic. I am simply testing the Board and have "applied" as several new members. As admin, I approved myself but I did NOT get email notification of approval. When I signed up for THIS FORUM I did not get email notification as it says on the sign-up form. Does this function not work?
  • You sure your spam blocker isnt catching the mails?
  • Is the function supposed to work automatically? When the admin approves the new applicant, does he automaitcally get an email notice? When I signed up on this forum, I did NOT get an approval notice.
  • This confuses me too, when I was testing Vanilla I got emails verifying acceptance. Now when users register I get nothing, they get nothing, very weird.
