Extension for Flagging/Moderating a Discussion?

edited January 2007 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
First, let me explain what I want to do, and then maybe someone can tell me if they know of a current Extension that already does what I need, or with some work, could do what I need. A user creates a discussion. As users continue to partake in this discussion, there's obviously going to be some tangents and side discussions that don't pertain to the core of the discussion, but overall the discussion will center itself around a topic. The discussion could be funny, could be informative and useful, could be 'Not Work Safe,' could be about something specific, it could be a variety of things that we may want to then classify and 'flag' for people so that it stands out from the other discussions going on. In order to be flagged a certain way though, certain members with the appropriate role on the site would need to vote for it. After a predetermined number of votes on a particular type of flag, the discussion is then flagged and would appear in a different color or maybe with an Icon next to it. Members with the ability to flag a discussion would have a dropdown box that would have all the available flags, and this could probably be done with Ajax so they select a flag and it does a vote on select? The different flags available could be added/removed through the Extension Options, along with the votes necessary for a discussion to be flagged. People could also select that flag from the main page to see all discussions that have been flagged that particular way. I've reread this a couple times and it makes sense to me, but I'm sure that some people don't understand what I'm really going for here. So if you have questions, I'll try my best to answer them. Thanks.

  • Kinda sounds a bit like a version of the tagging extension but with multiple users...
  • Yeah, I saw that tagging extension and tried it out, but it wasn't doing what I was looking for. It seemed to be more of a way to just give a discussion some key words so it sticks out and is easier to find. This method I'm looking for is kind of a way to assign a discussion to a category if you will, but only after a certain number of votes have been cast for that category.
  • Certainly an interesting concept, but couldn't you do this already by having a mod move it to a different category? Just create a bunch of read-only (to the standard members) categories such as "Interesting, funny, naughty" etc. Then the mod's can just use the whisper functionality to decide where to move it, or just move it.
  • It sounds like combining the tags and voting extensions plus adding in some other stuff might work, Doctor Frankenstein.
  • Yeah, that was actually one of my thoughts originally but I/we really liked the whole concept of quick voting to flag a discussion. This voting system is currently in use on the current site, and when moving to Vanilla, we'd like to make the transition without changing how too many things work.
  • If all a mod has to do is pick something from a dropdown (which could be created by anyone with permission to change extensions) and after a specified number of "votes" the discussion gets flagged automatically, then I reckon it's a worth extension :) I also think that people with this ability should be able to change the dropdown to anything else they choose at any time. In other words, you can keep changing your mind, and should enough mods change their mind (if the discussion changes dramatically for example) then the flag will change, again automatically.

Also a good option would be to allow users to hide certain flagged posts.. so for example in their account settings they check not to show any NSFW posts.. so therefore anything flagged with NSFW gets hidden from them.
  • Alright, so it seems like more people than myself see some worth to this Extension, but it appears we don't really have anything that's close to it already? If that's the case, I guess I'll start working on the Extension from scratch then. I've never made one for Vanilla and I haven't donned my programmers hat in the last year, but its never too late to get back into things. Lets see how long this catastrophe takes, lol.
  • ADM, that's a bloody good idea mate ;)
  • *bump*

would love something like ADM spec'd there!
