WhosOnline question

I've been using the WhosOnline extension, and it works great. I had a small question in extending it.. My site features a small audio player that runs in a popup launched from the site. I already have the popup checking against Vanilla's authentication system, but it only does that when the window launches. Now, if a user launches the popup, and leaves the main forum site.. in 1 minute, they're marked as no longer online, even thought they're still on the player window. I'd like to know how to extend the player code to update the WhosOnline table.. but it seems like the extension is only triggered in the panel.. Any ideas?
