Change default page

edited January 2007 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
Hi Vanilla Community! I have one question regarding changing the default page (currently "Discussions") to for example "Categories". I have the PageManager extension installed, but am aware that re-ordering the tabs won't change the default page. Any advice how to accomplish this as a non-programmer? Thank you guys! Dada

  • Is there an easier way to go about this? Or more detailed instructions? I am afariad I am going to break anything. Any advice very much appreciated! Thanks all! Dada
  • I agree, there needs to be an extension for this so you can just point and click to change the default page.

I agree too, this should be in the core!

You must be maturing mate, you'll find yourself agreeing with me more and more as you gain life experience!

  • haha I am 52 how old are you 105?
  • Sorry mate, in your account info it says "job - 9th grade"
Not to mention your grammar and punctuation skills!
Don't tell me you teach 9th grade? pic

  • haha lol I meant to change that before you read it. Well you're lucky I am in ninth grade or you would have insulted a teachers punctuation.
I forgot I had put that in my profile....
And I guess as I get older I will agree with you more. Because when I go senile I will need the simplicity of a Mac. J.K. I truly hate Bill and the lousy crap he calls Windows. I think Apple has done a good job recovering and hopefully out number windows one day.

" A computer lacking windows is like sex lacking your mom."

I have proofread this to the best of my ability, but you will prolly (sic) find an error

If you were a teacher with that style of writing mate, you would have deserved the insult!

  • haha ok well i help out a girl I know her mp3 player, she is an English master, like 110% in honors English whereas most people got like a C on the test. Anyway since i helped her with the tech stuff she said she will proofread every English paper I write all through high school.
  • Ok guys, i've made an extension that allows you to have the categories page as the default page and also has the option of indefinitely showing the discussions page (index.php) at all

Sorry Vincent, your extension has the same problem my own little hack did.

Sure it takes you to the categories page by default but it breaks the discussions tab.

No matter what this is set to...
    $SHOW_DISCUSSIONS_PAGE = true;
Also, when you do select a category, it's not listed, just goes back to categories.php

  • are you sure? i've tried this on two completely different forums and it's worked for me....

could i get some examples on the links your going to because it shouldnt change the listing of the categories...
  • I'm positive...

    It's just the standard...

    http://www.debono.com.au/forum/categories.php
    http://www.debono.com.au/forum/index.php

I've disabled it by the way.

I'm also using Discussions Overview, not that it should make a difference?

  • ok, i'll explain what it does.

if a url like this happens and it doesnt say 'index.php' at the end
    http://lussumo.com/community/
it'll jump to the categories page no matter what

if it has the index.php at the end
    http://lussumo.com/community/index.php
it'll stay or leave that page depending on the $SHOW_DISCUSSIONS_PAGE variable

i've just figured out that the end may not be a slash, so i will fix that up, but other than that, that's basically what's going to happen. If it doesnt happen like i've just explained it, please yell at me :P
  • LOL @ Wanderer and y2kbg discussion :) I love it! :)
  • Same here, Jazzman. That's awesome.

I just tried it an when I go here, http://exhibitq.com/talk/settings/ it tries to send me here, http://exhibitq.com/talk/settings/categories.php which ain't gonna work :/ Friendly URLs incompatible?

I had to disable it by manually removing it from /conf/extensions.php as it wouldn't let me go to any link at all.
  • ok, slashes problem has been fixed
