cutenews

found something really cool.

since im not a big fan of wordpress blogs (to much, filled up with to many uneccesary things, skinning takes to long) i found this treasure here.

ultrafast, super easy configuration, and the skinning is easy like abc.

  • Yeah I used to use cutenews quite a bit. Great little app.
  • I was interested in: - You don't need MySQL, everything is stored in (flat) files What does (flat) files mean? Why does it not need My SQL (or other databases)? Can Vanilla be modified (eg. FlatVanilla) to make use of any no-db advatage? Will it take up less storage space?
  • A flat file database means the data is saved in plain text files, usually with one table per file, and one record per line. So with cutenews they have code which reads the data directly from the text tfiles, instead of reading the data from a MySQL database, which would require you to have a MySQL server running.

At the moment Vanilla requires MySQL, but I believe it is written so that it could use other types of databases, so I guess it's theoretically possible.

I have used CuteNews back when it didn't have that idiotic license where you are not allowed to remove it's logo from the footer. Basically it is a kiddiescript that is excellent for you as your first CMS. It doesn't support anything but the basic news publishing and everything else is a hack. I have moved over to Textpattern and man, good riddance!

[Edit]: If you are looking for a simple CMS, give sNews a try, it is a full blown CMS (lightweight) in one single php file.
