Best free OCR software

byttebytte
edited February 2007 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
I gave OCR software a try back in 1997 or so and it was so bad that I never looked at it again. Yesterday someone convinced me that OCR software has gone a long road since the nineties and that it's actually good and might be time consuming in a lot of cases. Now I'm wondering what's the most interesting or best free OCR software out there? I'm about to give it another try, after 10 years...

  • If you're on windows then the microsoft document image whatsit is actually quite reasonable at OCR. You can also (in theory) enable its OCR engine to the windows indexing service and it'l index the text contents of your image documents, though I've never had that fully working (bloody pc's eh?)

Otherwise I believe quite a few people like irfan.
