Searching by User Real Name Not Working

edited March 2007 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
In my forum - 1.0.3 - if I login as the main administrator (with all privileges enabled), I can go to the search page, and search for a user by Real Name. For instance, I can search for all "John"s, regardless of what their login/username is (I get several results). However, if I login as a 'normal' user, and perform exactly the same search, the result is empty. It turns out, that if I search for a user while logged in using a normal account, it is only searching the username. This is a bit of a problem, as sometimes people want to whisper to someone they know, but forgot what the person's username is, and need to do a search by Real Name. Has anyone experienced this problem? Is this something that has been fixed in the latest version?

  • I never actually realised that this function existed...!

The reason you can't search by real name is because users are allowed to make their real names private. A fix would be to make it so that it only allows you to search the real name if they have granted permission to make it public, but I haven't done that because the search is already getting too slow.
  • @Mark: thank you for the clarification. A suggestion: perhaps this type of search could be added to the "Advanced" panel (ie, a tickbox), so that it is not a search that is done by default (thereby slowing all other types of search down), but there is still the option of doing it!
