Help on hiding some categories from Non-Members

edited May 2007 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
Is there a way to hide certain categories from non-members? I only want them to see two categories: a welcome category and an open forum category. Is there a way to do this? Your help is most appreciated.

  • Each category can have some or all roles allowed to view it. If there are 5 categories you don't want non-members to see, then I would think you could un-check the unauthenticated role and that would work.
  • jimw is spot on. Go to Settings, then Categories, and (one by one) edit the categories you don't want non-members to see. Make sure that the checkbox next to "Unauthenticated" is unchecked in those categories, and you're done. And of course, make sure that "Unauthenticated" is checked in the categories that you do want non-members to see.
  • Hi, guys. Thanks for your quick response. I have unchecked the Unauthenticated role but as it is, people can still see the hidden categories and discussions. Any further help is appreciated.
  • Are you using other add-ons? This process worked on my site. Hmmm!

  • If memory serves me correctly, I think in order to properly "hide" categories from non-members while still allowing them to see a few without being signed in you need to do the reverse. Make Vanilla a "private forum" where only the categories you want to be seen can be seen by applicants, unauthenticated and banned users while hiding the rest as you're already doing.

Check out the following Wiki Documentation Link that describes the Public vs Private setup system and some bits of the in-betweens.
