Accessibility

edited January 2006 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
The forum does not validate for even A level accessibility. Simply putting a <label> tag around every form input would technically validate it at AAA accessibility. Surely a simple action like this is worth it? After all, Vanilla is about embracing standards, eh?

  • I'll just jump in for mark here and say "we're working on it!", I'm sure after he sees this post though he'll add it to his "to-do list".
  • Ok - keep me posted on the progress. I'll spread the word when it becomes accessible.

  • from the outside, things appear ok, however, you're right, on the inside, all is not well. I'll add this to the buglist.

That's not accessibility. That's standards. Try: http://www.cynthiasays.com/ and set to Priority 3 - you'll notice it fails at the first priority level, 1, for pages with forms. (eg http://lussumo.com/community/signin.php and many others) If this forum was made level 1 (or without much work 2 or 3) then it would cause a big stir in the accessibility world. The only problems I've seen are labels, or lack of. If they were put around inputs/textareas then this would be huge. Could this happen?

Absolutely. I'm just not up on what needs to be done to bring it up to code. If you wanted to go through page-by-page and send me an email of what needs to be done (or at least a few pages so I get the general idea), I'd be happy to bring it up to par for the next rev.
  • OK - will send you some examples soon. Cheers. Andy.
  • thats awesome! really
  • For accessibility, here are some resources a friend of mine uses: http://forum.alsacreations.com/topic.php?fid=6&aid=30 (check "Ressources Internationales" for english ones as this is a french forum) and in particular "Bobby", the #1 link of this section http://webxact.watchfire.com/
  • Mark, I sent you an email with some examples. Reckon it would be easy to add the labels?
  • Vanilla Staff
It should be, yes. Thanks for the tip!
  • Hello there. I'm very interested in the work that you are doing with this forum framework. I have worked with applying Web and Accessibility Standards to phpBB and I certainly wouldn't mind helping out with any Accessibility standards issues that you are working on. Good work from what I've seen so far. Cheers, cb
  • Just checking back after arriving here from accessify. Mark, did any changes I suggested ever make the next version of Vanilla? I know a lot of people would love an accessible forum.

Have you gotten a copy of vanilla 0.9.3 yet? I haven't put the label tags in yet, no. But if you wanted to take a look at the templates and either do it yourself or tell me where, I'd be glad to.
  • http://www.htmlcodetutorial.com/forms/_LABEL.html This shows you how to insert a label tag correctly. It's fairly simple but email me if you need some help. OK?
  • Am I right in guessing Vanilla forums still aren't accessible?
  • Is there any development with regards to making vanilla forum accessible?
