ensuring one-word usernames?

I'm having people registering usernames with spaces and apostrophes in them... and I just don't like it! Is there some way to force people to use things like - or _ instead of a space when they sign up?

    do a preg_match_all() look for spaces and apostrophes. if true spit out error.
