How come it is that extensions have so many files in them and they say just install default.php? Or am I supposed to upload all files except for the readme?

Each extension has whatever files are needed by it and each is different. That is up to whatever the programmer decides in his or her design. For example, GoogleMapDirectory has 7 files and a folder. CategoryIcons has 2 files and a folder. The one consistent file is the default.php file.

You really should upload the entire extension folder with it's contents.

    Including the readme?

I would say yes. It is part of the complete package. Although you won't read it on the server.

ithcy, I think that's when people just copy over the default readme copy without bothering to add anything to it.
