Grabbing first 100 chars of first post?

Hey,
Looking to grab, say the first 100 chars or so of the first post and add it to the Discussion topic's "<'a'>" as the "name", so when people hover over it, they can get a preview of what it's about.... Might do the same for last response..., any1 know of an EASY way? I'm thinking SQL might have to get involved, which isn't a biggie. I was hoping some one knew of a way to get x amount of chars from any of the elements, with php.
In the Ocean style, I'm thinking I'd have to use one of these if that was possible -" $CommentList " or "$Comment->Body."
