edited August 2005 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
I've been ripped. And not even well. http://www.oioj.net/blog/user1/1243/index.shtml - the scumbag. http://www.36-degrees.co.uk - the original. me = not happy.

  • Oh god, and a terrible rip to boot. That sucks, stuart. it really does. I like it when people like the design, and do their own variation on it, but damn, this is a straight up rip-off and that's sad. I've noticed this has been happening a lot more over the past year, kids will never learn...

What can we do to prevent ripping?
  • Public shaming is one route to go down, if you speak the same language it helps. Faiing that, contact the host of the culprit explaining the situation and they should take it down.
  • I assume you have already contacted them? Can I send them and email also? I love thier responses when they get found out. Much fun. As lech said: That sucks. I hope you get it sorted out soon. *pulls down my rip of 36-degrees*
  • *lol* sure nathan, go ahead, the address I found for the guy is: snaketears@gmail.com
  • That does, indeed, suck :( How did you find out by the way?
  • hehe, nice choice in address for the ripper snaketears...

  • He has posted about the design on a BBS, would you believe, citing me as a sub-copyright holder, before offering the design for download as a blog template!

stuart, check this out: apparently your site design is somewhere being offered up as a "template" translation via google http://216.239.39.104/translate_c?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&langpair=zh-CN%7Cen&u=http://www.oioj.net/blog/user1/1243/archives/2005/56872.shtml&prev=/language_tools translation via altavista http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/trurl_pagecontent?lp=zt_en&trurl=http%3a%2f%2fwww.oioj.net%2fblog%2fuser1%2f1243%2farchives%2f2005%2f56872.shtml
  • Yeah, I noticed that. What a clown!
  • >> *lol* sure nathan, go ahead, the address I found for the guy is: snaketears@gmail.com Will do. If it is funny, I shall post their reply.
  • while i'm not sure exactly what to do about the situation, digging through the links found this, which i'm TOTALLY ripping for my next site design, yo!
  • there is much ripping going on...also with major sites like flickr anf 43things -> http://geek.textdriven.com/articles/2005/06/21/chinese-43things-clone
  • I'm in no way advocating mis-use or unauthorized use of intellectual property. But imagine if programmers were as uptight about their work as designers... There wouldn't be any open source applications. There wouldn't be any free support. And there would only be a couple of forums and blogs out there. To date, I haven't seen a single website/designer providing free quality and complex templates (a quality and a complex that matche those of the open source codes out there). And again, I do think what this other dude did is wrong. And Stuart, you should definitely contact his hosting company.

the higher-profile the site. the more it will be ripped off. in some way you could try to consider it a compliment, i guess. imitation, flattery, blah blah etc. i know the dude who started cssbeauty and he gets ripped like every week or two.
  • Hehe at the bottom you can still see the 36 logo under the "copyright"

let me also add my chime of "laaaame"

    i kinda like his better.

    ;)

i was ripped one time as well a few years ago. i had a stats tracker code on there and the dude stole that, and found his site looking through the stats. i looked at it and shit myself. i was flattered for 3 seconds, then I got pissed.

i emailed him and he pulled it.. saying he was just learning from my site.

definitely post it on Pirated Sites..
  • it looks different now - a blue blocky affair.
  • Yeh it looks like the page was changed. Public shaming does that to people.

Anyway.. If someone is going to base a variation off of an original design, they should say so in the source code. Somewhere near the top. Imitation is a low level of flattery right?
  • it definately looks different now.
