PHP & MySQL to create a latest dobredo?

I have succesfully achieved this with Wordpress and PHP, and was wandering how difficult it would be to create the same thing with Vanilla. I have version 1.3 I would like my homepage to display this information, the date and time the latest comment was posted on, the last posters username, the original posters username, the discussion title (with link), the discussion categories (with link?), and the first 135-300 (so i can edit) characters of that latest post. Can this even be achieved? If so am I looking at complex code, and if so is there a way to do it that is quicker, and more efficent? TIA Adam

    I think the Simplified Categories add-on does partly what you want. You could take the code on modify it.

    That isn't what I am looking for. I was looking to write my own PHP code.
