Sun to buy MySQL?

Is it true?

What implications for projects like Vanilla?

I thought MySQL was open source?

Sun is paying $1 billion (USD) for MySQL AB, the company that owns the MySQL trademark and copyrights.

    Yes, it's true.

Minimal implications for Vanilla, if any. The MySQL database is under GPL and can be forked, if necessary. Also PostgreSQL is as good if not better, almost as widely available, and under BSD. Though this is probably academic, as Sun has proven to be a faithful custodian of the open-source OpenOffice. Free databases won't go away any time soon.

Nothing but good news here for IT workers who pimp open source. Sun's "prime-time" service and support operation gives instant credibility to MySQL.

If you weren't already worried about MySQL's two best data storage engines being purchased by Oracle, this shouldn't make you start worrying.
