Welcome message to newly registered members?

How is it possible to have a welcome message to newly registered members?

The way I have things set up is that after registering, the user's landing page is account.php.
How to show a one-time message in the header? Or a message with a 'close/don't show again' button?

    the poll extension shows such a notice, maybe you can look around
    if not, i think there was one working with mootools, named approx. System Message
    i don0t remember if there are others..
