Categories and null values: Forcing users to select appropriate categories

How can the category drop down on the post page be made to include a blank entry at the top of the list of categories available for selection?

What I think would work better, in the case of our forum (for our lazy members who can't seem to select the appropriate categories), is that when the "Start your Discussion" button is pressed and the form validates the input fields for null values, it could check the category too. This way members are forced to actually think about and select a category rather than just by-passing it.

In other words, there is no default category selection.

Clear as mud, or useful contribution to the Vanilla community?
