  • so very very shiney! I have a LifeDrive (PalmOne) with 4GB built in, and 2 gig SD card. That is PLENTY for a handheld device. Plus it has built in WiFi, so I can connect to my local network (at home and at work and in my neigbours house [to my network... that thief]) and transfer my files if needed. I also dislike PocketPC. some of the devices are better than the palmOne devices, but I just can't stand the OS.

I've got two debian machines, two xp machines, one apple g4, and one linux firewall. I guess you could say that I subscribe to no particular OS, but use each for my own strange and terrifying purposes.
  • Here's why I buy into Apple's marketing:

    interface.

I've been running Gentoo on my laptop at work and I just can't get it to look as nice as OSX. Maybe I'm just spoiled, but I like the GUI to look nice.

Plus the actual hardware is pretty. Why can't geeks be fashionable too?
  • David, depends on what desktop you're running atop gentoo tho, personally, I like xfce. It's kind of sharp and easy on the eyes. While apple hardware does look nice, I don't care for what it looks like as long as it does it's real job. It's kind of like buying a SUV without taking it offroad making the purchase there rather pointless. In terms of hardware, you could be sacrificing function just to have an overly priced pretty little box. However I will agree that some of the apple cases do look nice, it's what's inside that really counts though.
  • ooh, xfce is nice. i think the site was down last week when i was looking for other window managers. gnome really hasn't progressed much since 2002 when i was last using linux on the desktop.

    /me jump-starts portage

oh...and the other reason i like macs: it just works. i feel like i spend too much of my time in linux fighting libraries and compilers and config files making things work the way i want them to.

I like Macs because you just can't do anything graphics heavy on a PC they just choke, I don't know where the problem is, but if I kick up Painter and start painting with watercolors, the fucker slows down to a crawl (comp. Athlon FX-55, 2Gig ram, GF7800GTX) and when I put it on my Maccy mac, which is way slower when you look at the specs, I can paint with water colors, have photoshop and firefox open and background and my Toon standgin around in world of warcraft. The memory control and processor workload is a charm in Apple comps, they don't reserve mem and cpu for applications running on background like WIN does (get it, win does, windows, haha, I'm a riot).
  • "It's kind of like buying a SUV without taking it offroad making the purchase there rather pointless" So...basically like 95% of SUV purchases worldwide...? For the record, i agree with both arguments. I'd love a mac and they are very pretty; but their price tag means i have even less use for them than i would anyway. Which considering most what i do on this pc is browse vanilla, i dont really need much :)
  • Just a sidenote, if you take SUV offroad, it will propably break it, SUVs are not ment to get offroad. There are literally thousands of Hummer V2s and other such SUVs brought for repairs because the toon tought that he could take a shortcut through a forest with it.
  • *puts hands on ears and yells LALALALALAL* Dont ruin my image of hummers. Unless v2's are different to h2's? How the fuck do you damage a hummer :|
  • Hummer v2 is the H2 H2 is just short for Hummer version. 2. And I hope that you understand that Hummer has nothing to do besides the look with the military grade vehicle M998 HMMWV, and H2 has even less to do with it. H2 is pretty decent vehicle in terms of a city vehicle, but an offroad vehicle it is not. It has very weak front and rear axle and it has the danger of breaking it in a rough terrain where there is alot of pressure pointed at them.
  • its no wonder there are problems with america when a car the size of the H2 is described as a city vehicle.

"A sport utility vehicle (SUV) or off-roader is a type of passenger vehicle which combines the load-hauling and passenger-carrying capacity of a large station wagon or minivan with features designed for off-road driving. In more recent years, the term has also grown to encompass vehicles with similar size and style that are marketed as sport utility vehicles, but which do not actually incorporate substantial off-road features." -quoted from Wikipedia Many these style vehicles has been made popular back in the days of Land Rovers and Jeeps which were designed to be offroad vehicles and then designed to be "sports utility", but then game Range Rover that was basically a Luxury SUV which cost alot of it's offroad abilities compared to Jeep and Land Rover. Modern SUVs are more Luxury style vehicles that are designed on the template of Range Rover but are equipped for more urban driving than offroad. And if you think the H2 is big, take a look at the 80s version of Chevrolet Suburban nicknamed "street home". In no means do I say that you can't drive a dirt road with it, but modern SUVs don't have the horsepowers to climb steep hills or rocky terrain.

Talk about a derailed thread :)
  • haha. i hadnt even noticed that, i dont tend to pay much attention to the thread titles when i click anymore, i just read the last post and refresh myself. I dont think the H2 is big. I think my Renault Grand Espace is big, the H2 is fucking huge. Americans are stupid.

Well.. it's not completely derailed, iPod nano is small, and we are talking about BIG cars.
  • actually, we are still on topic since we are still talking about overpriced yuppie status symbols. back when, i should have been more descriptive in expressing that you could get other mp3 players with more features, memory, etc. for a more affordable price.
  • but you couldnt when the origional ipod came out, could you? I could be wrong. but i'm pretty sure they atleast wernt at that size or with such a good UI
  • In my opinion you still can't get a better mp3 player. I like my iPod and I'll stick with it until I find something better.
  • When the first iPod came out it was the only mp3 player with such big HDD, and it became popular, so what justifies the existance of this new iPod anus or what ever? It's not ever cheap to lure in people who are buying their first iPod/player. It's pretty well the same as GBA, GBA SP and GBA Micro, all the same, they just look bit different, no dramatical changes. Or am I wrong, is there people crazy enough to have all four iPods for different occasions? I just don't see the point.
  • I doubt people have all 4, theyre just designed to target different people. I'm not particularly bothered about carrying 1000000 songs around with me but i wouldnt mind a couple of hundred (which still dont fit on the majority of 'mp3 players') and out of the ipod and its close competition (zen micro?) which are roughly the same size/spec i'd choose the ipod as its more stylish and easier to use. That said i'd consider the zen because it plays WMA's. Perhaps apple arent innovating anymore but theyre continuing to develop an extremely successful product range and we cant blame them for that. No doubt they would be considerably less successful if they didnt have what i believe is one of the best marketing teams in the industry as far as targetting audiences and making them buy stuff is concerned.
