Freeze a forum (spam everywhere)

My old forum is overrun with spammers. I wish to close the forum so that no-one can register for a new account, but I want to keep the old posts as they are.

How can I do this?

    Set new user role to applicant.

    Or modify the people_apply_form_nopostback.php theme file. This way you could put up some kind of 'registration is closed' message.
