New to Vanilla. Give me tips. Informational and monetary. :)

I just acquired a site from someone, which features a Vanilla forum version .9. I'm wanting to upgrade it to the newest version. I've already read the instructions to do that. I know HTML and CSS to the fullest, so I'm skilled at understanding code; however, PHP is new to me, so before I actually follow the instructions (backup, delete old files, import the new ones) is there something I should know, expect or do first?
