Trouble with login - Vanilla 1.1.5a

I installed vanilla 1.1.5a for the first time yesterday. Everything seemed to install without problem. However, when I went to login the form accepts my login but It takes me to the forum saying I am not logged in. If I use an incorrect login it give me an error that I used an incorrect log in. when I looked at the database user it showed my admin user name. So I am not sure how to fix this. any help?

i am hosting the site myself on my own server. I am running the newest versions of php, mysql, and Apache.

Have you enabled sessions on your server?
