I am new to Vanilla, and wanted to know
1) Is there is forum setting or or other way if which I can get notified (via email) if someone posts a comment to a discussion.
2) Also, if I mark the forum private, will the discussions still show up in a Google search.

check out the following addons: Notifi and Notify
They might solve your problem.

If you are not able to get to the information then Google wont either
Of course, you have to check that while you are logged out.
