Redirect to categories.php

I was wondering how it would be possible to redirect the DirectoryIndex to be the categories.php file. I already found that I can do that using the htaccess rule "DirectoryIndex categories.php", but then the tabs are not correct. On pageload the tab Discussions is still active when I set the htaccess file like above. Anyway to solve this?
