How to add an image in side panel?

you will notice i can add a banner at the bottom.....but i want to add a banner on the left sidepanel underneath "latest discussions" box but I can't seem to find where to add the code. Can anyone help? at least tell me which file I should be looking for. Thanks. I've tried almost every file and just cant locate where to put the code.
