Categories page in side Panel for Vanilla 1.1.9

Hi all -- I love the addition of Categories in the sidebar in Vanilla 2. What would be the approach to add categories to the sidebar Panel if I'm still using Vanilla 1.1.9?

Just something simple like seen on this forum. Thanks!
