How do I auto assign role to new signups

It appears that my new sign-ups are not being assigned a role so cannot sign in to their account after creating one. I have selected basic registration. I have 'force guest' addon but I don't think that's relevant. Would like sign-ups to be either guests or members, haven't decided. Any help is appreciated. Version 2.0.17.3
