Changing Categories

Hello, Im new to Vanilla and its really impressing. Good work!
I want to start up a forum with 4 Categorries and for each categorie about 10 sub-categories. I have got that but the page looks a bit "overloaded" now. Has anybody an idea how to get the following:
If I click on a category I would like that only the subcategoeries are shown (and also the clickable main-categories) ?
I think th change code for that is not very easy....:-/?
