Hello I'm running the version gotten from the Download tab (2.0.x I think) and I wonder if I should upgrade to 2.1a.
Is it safe? Can it break plugins? (I installed the forum 2 days ago so all plugins are newest versions)

2.0.x Version is THE STABLE Version of Vanilla (e.g. 2.0.18.9 as of today)
2.1b.x is the BETA Version (Next updated stable Version) (e.g. 2.1b2 as of today) (note the b)
2.x.a or 2.2a Is an early ALPHA version (note the a)
USE the 2.0. Version in productive systems
USE the 2.1. BETA for testing ONLY and post errors in Github
Alpha versions e,g, anything with an a e.g. 2.1a, 2.2.x.a (don't bother even attempting to use it, unless you know vanilla inside and out and are a developer).
Another piece of advice
learn how to identify the version of vanilla you are using and post the version in your question.

here's the deal
you can always try 2.1b2 and see if it works for you. it is obviously still in development.
The only issue is if you do have lots of problems (which you might not), the goal is not to have people who aren't really familiar with vanilla or php development with flooding the board with "I'm using 2.1b2, how do I do this, or this doesn't work, what should I do".
But it may very well work for you, especially if you are just starting your forum and have nothing to lose so to speak.
so its a mixed bag - you can try the beta and it may provide you with what you need.

Well to be honest I feel pretty comfortable with PHP so I might upgrade soon.
One last question: is there any estimated release date for new stable?

Welcome to the community. Be sure to add a new line after quote blocks so users may see your responses clearly. Additionally, it is not necessary to quote posts that are near the end of the discussion, you can use the at sign (

So it would be great if you give 2.1b2 a try. You can report issues on GitHub and maybe even supply a solution for errors you find. If you know how to code, you can also decide to use existing pull requests that handle known problems to make it your installation something like a Vanilla 2.1b3
