Forum Down - Repair/Restore Help

Hello!

Our forum mysteriously went down, and I'm hoping for some help reviving it. Here is the link http://forum.cinetics.com/
It is a version 2.1 forum, and I wasn't able to update to 2.2. Nothing was found at the .. /index.php?p=/utility/update link.
So I tried having our host (Bluehost) restore the cpanel to an older version, and that didn't fix the problem. The customer service rep told me it is a script error and to figure it out :/

Maybe my best bet now is to download backups, install a fresh version and reupload the content?
I downloaded a backup database and all my forum web files (including uploads folder, .htaccess and conf/config.php).

Is there any chance to revive it or should I try a fresh install of 2.2?
I appreciate any help.

Justin

    Welcome to the community.

    Sorry you're having grief.

If a site suddenly disappears, that is a hosting issue, regardless of what they tell you.

You seem to have all you need to get back up quickly.

    Personally, I would

    1) install a clean version of 2.2, with a new DB, and make sure that it works as expected

    2) upload any custom theme folder/files set the theme and check that works as expected

    3) upload your uploads folder

    4) edit config.php to point to your old DB, and delete any ini files in the cache folder

    5) Run the update utility

That should be you back up and running.

Good luck, and let us know if you run into any problems.

You can try to figure out the problem and then upgrade correctly. or you could not try to figure out the problem and hope a fresh install will work, each has its own downsides. If you can upgrade in place and determine problem, you will have a better understanding of things if you can solve the issue. Which way is faster above suggestion or this suggestion depends on what the issue is.

I would determine what the error is!

What error message do you get. If a blank page look at these troubleshooting instructions.
and check the apache or nginx or other error logs.

    http://docs.vanillaforums.com/developers/troubleshooting/

and these https://vanillaforums.org/discussion/31153/tutorial starting at line 9 (or earlier) thru the troubleshooting steps dealing with display errors.

if you are using apache, make sure your .htaccess is accurate and modified to reflect your forum location.

Pragmatism is all I have to offer. Avoiding the sidelines and providing centerline pro-tips.

  • Thanks for the help guys!! Was able to get it back up and running with a fresh install of 2.2 :)
