To install a plugin, extract it to your computer and upload it into the plugins folder of your installation.

I have tried this as well, even used an FTP into the folder, and it has NOT added the plugin. I've tried everything to install a single plugin and nothing seems to work. I have tried to research everywhere for an answer, readme files, install forums, instructions, etc, and nothing is helping to get this going.

You must provide what version of vanilla you're using what version of PHP what plug-ins you have enabled what theme you have enabled it's hard to guess what's wrong with your set up without more info.

  • Pouncer, stupid question but you do enable them in the dashboard of vanilla right?
Extracting them in the right location is not enough, you have to click an enable button per plugin.

  • your best bet if you are serious is to provide a screenshot of your plugins folder and the ownership and permissions of the plugins. If the folders are not readable they will not show up in your dashboard.

Some plugins won't show up if you have the wrong php version .

Where is the button to enable them? I can't find it for some reason.

  • The path is /dashboard/settings/plugins, and you can find it in your dashboard > Addons > plugins!

You must use PHP 6 or higher because arrays might be in [ ] brackets as short arrays and some php versions are not compatible. The result will be, not being able to see the plugin in the dashboard or an enable button.

It can also be that the name of the plugin and the name of the plugin folder do not match.

Did you install vanilla??? What plugin are you trying to enable. All of the core plugins should show up with enable buttons.
under the plugin section of dashboard.

This sounds a bit spammy to me.

Why do I think so. You post several messages to hello messages. You post to non-vanilla discussions and necro-post.

Perhaps I am wrong and you just have no experience with vanilla or general software that has add-ons, then the docs, blog and the tutorials category, may be helpful to you. I highly suggest reading them as well.

Vanilla help questions are best asked under the vanilla category for the release you are using, rather than posting a comment to an older discussion, with an unrelated question or tangential questions. If you are requesting help for vanilla 2.3 choosing the vanilla 2.3 category would be a good start.

if you have a question about a specific plugin then this discussion may be helpful

if you were capable of installing vanilla you should be able to state what version of vanilla you are using.

    To clarify your guidance.

Following [] is supported in PHP >= 5.4:

    https://ma.ttias.be/php6-missing-version-number/

    Here are the versions that work with vanilla 2.3 - php 5.4, 5.5, 5.6 , 7.0
note php 6.x is not in the list. If specifics are specific :)

yes, its a typo in your comment, but it needs to be amended so it doesn't cloud the issue.

    https://github.com/vanilla/vanilla/blob/release/2.3/README.md

    Self-Hosting Requirements
    We strongly recommend:
    PHP 5.6 or 7.0.
MySQL 5.5 or higher (or Percona/MariaDB equivalent).
If your server is not running PHP 5.6 or higher, you must address this immediately. All lower versions of PHP are no longer updated and are potentially unsafe.
    Our minimum requirements are now:
PHP 5.4 or newer with --enable-mbstring and the pdo_mysql module enabled.
If you intend to Migrate to Vanilla you will also need PHP with --with-mysqli.
MySQL 5.0 or newer (or Percona/MariaDB equivalent).
To use our social plugins, PHP's OpenSSL support must be enabled.
Vanilla ships with a .htaccess file required for Apache support. Using nginx or IIS may require additional configuration.
On the client side, Vanilla should run & look good in just about any modern browser. Still using IE? How exotic. You'll want IE8 or greater. IE7 might work if you squint hard and click gently, but we make no promises.
We've been natively mobile since before it was cool. Vanilla ships with a mobile-optimized theme enabled by default for all smartphones & tablets. Heck, it even works on the PlayStation Vita.

IMHO, if a plugin for vanilla 2.3 doesn't work with php 5.4 but works with php 5.6 only or php 7.0 only), it should be noted by the plugin author

enable button in the dashboard after you choose plugins.
