Vanilla errors everywhere

I'm on ubuntu 16.04. A fresh install of Vanilla Forums is extremely buggy and keeps telling me there was an error with practically everything. For example, clicking "change profile picture" on my own profile immediately throws
"Whoops there was an error",
Also viewing a post returns:
"Something has gone wrong.
We've run into a problem and are unable to handle this request right now.
Please check back in a little while."
I'm not really sure where the error log is either. So if someone could point me there, that'd be awesome.
