Any issues for forums powered by OSS Vanilla using plugins like YAGA, Reactions, and Q&A?

Are there any issues for forums powered by OSS Vanilla using plugins like YAGA, Reactions, and Q&A? Are they built for forums using the Vanilla cloud hosted clients, or are they for the OSS forums too? If the latter, what are the issues we should be aware of before plugging them in?

Apols for the possibly ignorant question.

    Welcome to the community.

Any plugin found in the Addons section here is open source.

Not sure anyone could say what issues there might be with a particular addon, since there are so many different platforms Vanilla could be hosted on.

    I would recommend

    a) setting up a test installation

    b) enabling any plugins/addons you like the look of

    c) going to the relevant plugin page and looking at questions that have come up about their use

  • @whu606 thank you for the quick and welcoming response. :)

I'm pretty new to the technical side of managing our Community. Do you recommend any tutorials for dummies on how to install plugins (and any on how to set up a test installation)?

  • Hey Andrew,

I personally use XAMPP to run a local test forum on my computer.
Basically you install XAMPP (For example in C:/xampp, don't put it in C:/program files/xampp that will mess up file permissions), then just unpack vanilla in C:/XAMPP/htdocs/testforum, and you can access it via your browser at the URL http://localhost/testforum/.

If you google "XAMPP wordpress site" you'll get a few tutorials which will show you the basics of how to work with XAMPP.

    You can download it here:

If you want to install a plugin, R_J wrote an excellent post: https://open.vanillaforums.com/discussion/33633/how-to-install-a-plugin-addon-theme

Just to say, the RJ post Caylus links to is very informative, but might seem a tad daunting, since it mainly deals with what to do if things don't work as planned.

Mostly, plugins get added to your plugins folder (if they aren't part of Vanilla core), you go to the Dashboard, and enable them, and that's it.

Some of the plugins may now not have been updated for a while, which may meant they don't work as expected in the latest (2.5) version of Vanilla.
