The attempt to update Vanilla 2.3.1 was not successful. Can you tell which files need to be updated?

You really shouldn't do a selective update. What do you mean by "not successful"?

Update to version 2.3.1 was successful, but an attempt to upgrade Vanilla to version 2.5.1 got it - "Something went wrong!" So I ask if you need to update all the files or simply update the new ones?

You can use GitHub to find out which files have changed, but that would only be a solution if you have messed up your current installation and you want to continue with that borked installation.

"Something went wrong" is the error message your users should see, if something wents wrong. You need to see more information. Search the forum to find how to get more information on the error.

Can you personally describe a step-by-step update to Vanilla?

I could, but it has been done before: https://open.vanillaforums.com/discussion/35687/vanilla-2-5-is-now-available

If you see an error, please debug it, otherwise there is no possibility to help you: https://docs.vanillaforums.com/developer/troubleshooting/
