Notification/Messages icons vanish too soon on mobile

I'm getting some complaints from users that they don't like that they have to now tap on their profile icons in the top right to access the notifications/messages controls/indicators. It seems like there's plenty of room in the top bar to display the normal top bar all the way down to about 400px, but the mobile toolbar is displayed from 768px. I'd like to at least have the option to select the width at which this occurs without having to mess with the theme CSS.

Any ideas about the best way to adjust this?

    I'm pretty sure we the breakpoint of 768 is defined as a SCSS variable. We'll have some docs coming soon for the best ways to tweak these variables in a custom theme, but I don't think we have a easy knob for tweaking this type of thing in our open source roadmap.
