OSS Search API

I'm building a React front end on Vanilla APIs and that's worked well for the most part, however it appears there is no available search API which limits our ability to use React on search pages. Is there actually no search API on Vanilla OSS or am I overlooking something? If this is actually a restriction, has anyone found a way around it, or am I simply required to use the search front end provided out of the box?
