system requirements for large forum

I'm going to be building a forum that could wind up being very large... at least hundreds of active users, but it could number in the thousands. How does Vanilla handle that kind of overhead? Am I going to need a dedicated server if we hit membership in the thousands? What if it's only in the hundreds, but they're very active? Also, there's a possibility that I will need to install this on a Windows server. Assuming that PHP and MySQL are there, will this be okay, or are there some drawbacks or issues?

    Other than the fact that Windows sucks, I think you're in the clear.

    which brings me to the question, Does Vanilla have caching mechanism. If it does then ur load to the server will be minimized.

    No caching yet. This forum has about 3500 users and is very active. I ran it on a shared server for a long, long time without too much hassle. There was, of course, the regular problems you get from being on a shared server - but nothing that could be helped by Vanilla.

    Only thing you can cache are categories and comments. The discussion list changes every second :)

    Are there informed - heck, uninformed - guesses as to how many active users (with this forum as the 'case') could be supported without a need for caching based on current performance and assuming a reasonably tuned server?
