I got the instructions ... thank you .. I followed the first part. Used PhpMyadmin and at the first page. I chose EXPORT. ALL. I left all other selections at default values. Clicked GO. Nothing happened. I did not get the text file to save.
I am still uneasy. Feeling my way in the dark. But less intimidated. Any comments. Please bear with me.
Yes ... I got the file. When I am ready to move, I will need to use phpMyAdmin to "import"? GoDaddy does not seem to have this on the control panel but I will investigate. (I have a site there so I can "go see".) There will be something in its place I assume. Another hurdle.
We are not moving until 10/31. At that time I will get another "dump" that has all the current posts. I also have to move the Vanilla Folder. I will "Put all the files in the Vanilla Folder on the new server . Then then update conf/database.php )to update my database server address, name, user name and password) and conf/settings.php to update any path related settings." Then I will "import" the data base and it should work as before.
I think I can do it. I have a concrete idea of the process now whereas before, the words had no meaning. Please stay with me. Thanks.
You should install xampp on your computer and try to move the forum to your computer to see what can go wrong.
Godaddy seems to have PhpMyAdmin; see the example about moving WordPress to Godaddy: http://www.wpvqs.com/?p=79
Also do a search about Godaddy in this forum to see if it is easy to install vanilla on Godaddy. Make sure to get a linux hosting; it is will better for php application.
I read and saved and printed out the WordPress piece. Moving the database should be similar. I will probably have troubles while I'm actually doing it.
There are two files in conf folder (database and settings) that contain many lines to alter ... I can see what has to be changed. It will take a miracle not to make a mistake.
I think xampp would be just an added layer of complication for me.

How big is your database dump?
