You are actually getting a bonk error although it looks like you have switched that page to the same as your 404 error page. I recommend switching your site to debug mode to see what is going wrong. (View Post)1 -

You most likely installed Vanilla before we added the confirm email role. Just create a role called Confirm Email. Make sure you give it sign in permission and probably view permission. (View Post)1 -
