Re: Searching
@Todd, I agree, the approach I'm describing may not work for multi-byte unicode, but should for unicode, and certainly does for western/ascii. I'm not trying to completely solve the problem of search and come up with a perfect solution. I'm only trying to do an 80:20 - to make a few simple tweaks that measurably improve… -

Just Implemented Stand Alone Vanilla Forum
Hi Everyone: Just wanted to introduce myself and give feedback re Vanilla. I've been running forums for years. SMF and then through Wordpress with SimplePress. As many might know, SimplePress changed to "pay" plug-in with version 5 for all the additional features, so started my search for a new forum. I'd come across… -
Re: i am a SAD SAD man. (vanillicon question)
you could easily modify ALL vanillicons. It's not really an off-topic question. it is a question relating to the vanillicon plugin and could have been posted there and tied to the plugin, so it would be easier to find. Off-topic category questions cannot be read by guests either, so it doesn't provide much help to anyone… -
Re: Hacked via Wordpress Plugin wysija-newsletters
I still don't know if they will be able to restore my site, but upon scanning I found this , some html/ExpKit.gen3 virus which I am not sure how it got there because my computer is clean. I saw that in a cache file from chrome, but it could be from any site, I am in Mexico and I do visit gov sites which are notorious for… -
Re: Articles 1.2.0 Released
@toolsmythe, perhaps the other columns exceeding varchar(191) need to be lowered to 191 or changed to another text type accordingly. What collation is your Vanilla's database set to and what collation are your tables and columns (choose any table as an example) set to? I'm using Adminer to check this, but you could use… -
Re: SQL fetching advice needed.
thank you hbf ok thats a good answer. which leads to another off-topic question is there any kind of tool in php that examines resource usage or profiles. I can certainly put timing in, but I was wondering, if there is something that shows, memory used by an object or any array or memory left. I haven't researched any… -
How to Start a Forum, Part B
Because this is very long it is split into more parts. So you now have a forum and it looks good and feels good. You have filled it with content and now you must make sure it is safe to use and visit. Each day, Google identifies 9,500 malware-infected websites, about 4,000 of which are legitimate sites compromised by… -
Brainstorming on the sense of a OS powered community forum
All that talking about self-building Vanilla from the sources, the lack of "official" support and some personal annoyances made me think about better alternatives. But at first: which annoyances are there from my side? I hate searching for the correct config debug setting if people ask about "Whoops" errors I hate telling… -
Re: Trying to create a Column Type of ENUM for my plugin
Vanilla uses a column called "Attributes" in several tables, most interesting tables are User, Discussion and Comment. That column is used to store "misc" information in an array. The Gdn_Model class (filename is class.model.php) has some helper methods, from which only the saveToSerializedColumn() method might be of…
